WEEK THREE -- DRIBBLING / SHIELDING

AIM OF SESSION: Improve dribbling technique and introduce shielding the ball

SESSION THREE

ORGANIZATION

COACHING POINTS

WARM UP
0-10 minutes

Chain Tag - 20x15 yard grid
2 catchers, when a player is tagged, link arms and become a chain

Progression
1. Introduce balls

Head up,

Move quickly/change direction

Keep ball close

Use inside/outside of feet to turn quickly

EXERCISE ONE
10-20 minutes

 

Soda Fountain – 20x15 yard grid . Name the four different sides of the box with a soda, when commanded, players must run to that side.

Progression
1. Introduce balls
2. Toe taps at side
3. Turn at the side

Three rules of dribbling:

1 – Keep the ball close

2- Use your laces to dribble fast

3 – Keep your head up

EXERCISE TWO
20-30 minutes

 

Star Wars – 20x15 yard grid

Players must get from 1 side of the box to the other and stop, however a catcher in the middle of the box is going to try and kick their ball away and if successful, the player will join the catcher

Three rules of dribbling:

1 – Keep the ball close

2- Use your laces to dribble fast

3 – Keep your head up

CONDITIONED GAME
30-40 minutes

Small sided games enforcing dribbling

Condition = When you pass the half way line you must dribble + shoot

Re-enforce dribbling points

EXERCISE THREE
40-50 minutes

Shielding in 2’s – In pairs. 1 player has to protect a piney that has been placed on their hip,

Progression
1. Place piney on ground and protect it
2. Replace piney with ball

Get Low, 1 foot in front of the other

Feet shoulder width apart

Get between the player and ball

Be strong

EXERCISE FOUR
50-60 minutes

Shielding Box – working in 3’s - 4x4 yard box

The player with the ball must hold off a defender for 5 seconds and complete a pass to the third player outside the box

 

Get Low, 1 foot in front of the other

Feet shoulder width apart

Get between the player and ball

Be strong

CONDITIONED GAME
60-70

Small sided games enforcing shielding – 2 boxes either side of field

Condition = Players must dribble ball into a box and hold it their for 5 seconds

Re-enforce Shielding points

SMALL SIDED GAMES - 4V4
70-85 minutes

Small Sided Field - 30 x 24 yards ( 24 = 10 yards either side of a 4 yard goal)

This wide area will ensure maximum playing time without as many breaks in play for throwings.

Allow to play, let each child enjoy the game

COOL DOWN
85-90 minutes
