SESSION FOUR

ORGANIZATION

COACHING POINTS

WARM UP
0-10 minutes

1000 Touches – 20x20 yard area
This warm-up will be consistent throughout the ages and will work on close control. Click here for an explanation of 1000 Touches.

EXERCISE ONE
10-20 minutes

 

Defending ball in 5x5 yard area. In pairs

1 player shields the ball one tries to steal the ball.  Rotate when player wins ball

Get low, get between player and ball, wide stance – standing side on, use flat arm to protect body position, stay strong

EXERCISE TWO
20-30 minutes

 

3v1 shielding, 10 x 30 yard area, this long narrow field requires players to shield effectively and turn quickly, a man at either end of grid, 1v1 in the middle.  One man on end passes to receiver.  Receiver must shield ball/turn and pass out to the other man at the end of grid. Rotate.

Get low, get between player and ball, wide stance – standing side on, use flat arm to protect body position, stay strong

GAME RELATED PRACTICE
30-40 minutes

3v3 shielding - 20 x 30 yard area,,  area is divided into 3 thirds, in each 3rd, players must pass through each grid before turning and shooting at goal.  Players must stay in their own grid and pass forward.

Get low, get between player and ball, wide stance – standing side on, use flat arm to protect body position, stay strong

CONDITIONED GAME
40-50 minutes

Players can only pass back. By forcing players to pass back they will automatically be forced to shield the ball to maintain possession, and will be required to hold off challenges as they dribble forward.

Re- enforce shielding technique

BEDDING DOWN
50-60 minutes

Depth – 16x10 yard area,  Defenders must successfully prevent Attackers penetrating their line

GAME RELATED PRACTICE
60-75 minutes

2v2 + Goalkeeper,  2 attackers start 28 yards from goal, 2 defenders start 18 yards from goal.  Attackers run forward and try to beat defenders and shoot, defenders must try to prevent shot by using bedding down coaching points.

SMALL SIDED GAMES – 4v4
75-85 minutes

4v4 Small Sided Field - 35 x 22 yards (24 = 10 yards either side of a 2 yard goal)

Ensure team is still working at a high tempo.

Re-enforce sessions points, don’t loose focus of group

COOL DOWN
85-90 minutes

Relaxing Movement + recap session

Slow + gentle movements
